James Sly

Finance Director

Background

Having always been driven by an interest in how the world works, I was fortunate to receive an offer to read Economics and Management at Oxford University. After graduating I trained as a Chartered Accountant, joining PwC’s assurance graduate programme and specialising in working with investment management clients.

Once qualified as a Chartered Accountant, I joined the head office for a large retail group as their Group Financial Accountant and later moved a specialist bank as their Finance Manager. More recently I was the Finance Director of the Housing division at Gresham House. There I looked after a number of listed and private property funds, as well as taking responsibility for the corporate accounting of its regulated fund manager.

I joined Mercia in 2021 as Finance Director of the Mercia Fund Management Limited (MFM), our regulated entity responsible for Mercia Ventures’ retail (VCT and EIS) funds. As part of my role I am responsible for the MFM and Northern VCTs’ finance and operations teams, as well as working across the wider Mercia Ventures team.

I enjoy working as part of a team that is dedicated to supporting early-stage companies and helping founders achieve their goals.
